Ice rules
Welcome to Thialf. For everyone's skating pleasure, here are our most important ice rules!
Below, we’ll explain what you need to get on the ice
Skates Got your own skates at home? Make sure they’re sharp! Dull blades reduce your grip on the ice and increase the risk of falling. If your last skating session was on natural ice, sharpening is a must. You can book a sharpening appointment at the skate shop in Thialf.
Renting skates
Don’t have your own skates? No problem! At Thialf, you can rent various types and sizes of skates at Haico Bouma's skate shop.
Helm Wearing a helmet is mandatory at Thialf. You can rent one at the skate shop or bring your own.
Want to stay safe on the track? Helmet on and go!
What makes a good helmet?
A proper helmet meets the latest safety standards, like ASTM F1849. It’s important that your helmet has a round or oval shape. Make sure the chin strap fits securely so the helmet stays in place while skating.
A bicycle helmet offers less protection due to the large ventilation holes, which a skate blade could slip through. Helmets with a pointed back are strongly discouraged – falling on the ice with one can cause serious neck injuries. Soft or ribbed skate caps are not considered helmets and are therefore not allowed.
Clothing Wear flexible clothing that covers your entire body – especially your wrists and ankles. The average temperature in the ice hall is around 15°C. A warm scarf or neck gaiter is great, but a thick winter coat won’t be necessary.
In addition to a helmet and a solid pair of skates, wearing (cut-resistant) gloves is also mandatory.
At Thialf, we offer a range of facilities – including plenty of free parking! Below you’ll find an overview of our most important amenities:
Changing Rooms Thialf has multiple changing rooms with separate shower areas. Please don’t leave any valuables behind. Leave them at home or keep them with you. A limited number of lockers are available (first come, first served).
